Essentials in a Well Designed Web Site
Once you are reading this article, I cam bet that you would like to have a well designed web page that stands apart from the crowd of web pages already made on the subject. Competing for a top slot in results among millions of pages that search results report is not a simple task by any means. Neither is there any trick that would guarantee you the top placement overnight in the results for ever. You have to keep changing the practices and keep pace with the time.
At the same time, getting top slot is not too difficult too. On the positive side, while you would see millions of pages on a subject, you can always find a specialty niche for your site that helps you stand apart from the crowd and helps you gain visitor confidence and make a returning visitor. If you follow some simple tweaks, You would find suddenly your completion is not with million sites on the subject but just with handful of sites that are well designed.
1. Appropriate and Researched Keywords
To begin with, I may suggest to through my earlier article on the subject. Each keyword is searched different number of times. And above all, even if the keyword identified by you is fine and relevant, please study how many times, synonym of the word is searched. This may give you good reason to change the word with its synonym. A good choice of keyword will be sound pillar of your site and the traffic it gets.
There are many software and sites available on the net that would help you find the frequency of search for a particular keyword. Some of them are GoodKeywords, Wordtracker, Nichebot etc. You must check the competition for your chosen keywords or phrase.
You may do this checking monthly or fortnightly. As an example, if your site is about Hollywood celebrities, you may do well to know about the most searched celebrity in the given period. I would like to share one experience of a client of mine, where his site was one the first to announce the second wedding of Britney Spears and was the first to be picked up by Google news. The client happily laughed all the way to bank in few hours.
Next step would be to check the keyword density in the content. Ideally the density should not be more than 12% and not less than 7%. Make sure to have appropriate keyw0rds in title tag, headline, body content, url phrase etc. this would expedite inclusion in appropriate category of search engine index.
2. Innovative yet Simple Design with good navigation
KISS (Keep it simple stupid) is the key. Make a professional looking page with least jargon and even less confusion in navigation. Spell check is absolute must especially if your traffic is from western part of globe. You would do good if you check through any utilities available on the net to find out you your page looks on the net. Keep navigation simple and offer site map if need be. Each page should have content not less than 500 words and I would go on to suggest not more than 1300 words too.
If your article is longer than 1200 words, it may make sense to split into two pages, to my mind splitting an article in smaller lengths is irritating.
3. Keep Page Optimized for Search Engines.
An optimized page would get indexed soon and in right category. Optimized page means
Appropriate keyword density, right heading, bold headlines where required and above all not more than 3 links down from main page of the site. Blogging / RSS feeds, readers comments would also be good to increase reader participation and gaining loyalty of readers. You may use wordpress. Avoid use of flash unless absolutely essential and keep image size low to help page load fast.
4. Simple Navigation
Simple navigation would make your site look professional as well as help gain readers attention. Prefer to put all the main links on their site at the top or the bottom of your home page, so that a visitor can freely move around and find what they're looking for. Keep your visitors' comfort level in mind at all times.
5. Content is the King
Always have fresh and updated content. Make sure you update your webpage often and ensure to keep your material current and relevant. Only reason a visitor is on your page is for information.
6. Adding to Favorites link
If you have professionally designed site with great content, visitors are likely to book mark it and in fact this is what you would also want that your visitor should bookmark your page and return to it for more information. Make sure you make it easy for your visitor to bookmark your page. Make your page stand out from the crowd. Try to make it unique. Just remember, a simple professional webpage with valuable information is always cool.
Be assured that your page will grown in rankings and popularity.
