Programming and keeping your site abreast with the latest trends and practices is an ongoing phenomenon. Problem in site optimization is that in case you are trying to cheat a search engine, it is detected in few days time and you are gone and in case you are on ethical route, you are competing with millions of others, who too are following the similar route as you are. Loosing out traffic from a major search engine is definite way to loss of real sales and conversions. In fact, I tend to lose most of my clients, when I insist that there is no shortcut to getting links on search engines over night and right path starts from first having lots of original content. However, this statement is also half truth. If you have a body, you need to flaunt it. If you have content, you need to get it indexed on search engines and you would agree that you would need to do it rather fast. I would deliberate on few measures that you need to do and rest assured you would have traffic you can dream of.
So while you are contemplating designing a new site or are frustrated with an old site that you are unable to get traffic for; follow the following suggestions, as derived from experience of many web masters as well as from Google’s guidelines to webmasters:

1. You would find it rather funny; but it is the fact that first step to making a good site is to forget search engines but to care for humans; as to what they would perceive and how they would get the information that they want. In fact, the first thing in the day you should do is to see the site stats and see on which particular terms, the visitors landed on you site. you may be amazed to note that for at least 50% to 60% of the search terms visitors landed on your site, you had nothing substantial to offer; but they landed some how. Of course, most of them would have exit as they got nothing. It means, if you populate your site with the relevant content on those terms, you are going to rank higher as well as gain a returning visitor.
2. Be transparent and don’t do anything to befool search engine. Take a simple example. Imagine you created a page on your site way back in 1997 when the search engine were not that well equipped to detect a spamming page with junk repeated characters that you stuffed to gain high keyword density. Few years, you would have got traffic but today your page and most probably the site would be ranking in spamming sites. Even if you are able to locate a bug in search engine results algorithm today and you are able to exploit that today, what is the assurance that tomorrow, with improved algorithms of search engines, it wont be caught and your site penalized for the same.
3. Forget participating in link exchange schemes to gain page rank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.
4. Forget use of automated programs that violate Google terms of service. Programs that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google would do no good to your site.
5. Have a simple hierchy for your site and make it simple to navigate. Typically a site should not be more than three levels deep. Make sure that each page in your site should be reachable from at least one static text link.
6. What about having a site map for your site; it is going to be equally helpful to your site visitors as well as search engine spiders.
7. Make sure your site has good content and again make sure that content has adequate keyword density too. Typically, while there can be some disagreement on right keyword density, 12% density is considered to be optimum.
8. Try using text instead of images as search engine spiders including that of Google are not able to read images. Make sure that your TITLE and ALT tags are descriptive and accurate.
9. Ensure there are no broken links in your site.
10. If you decide to use dynamic pages (i.e., the URL contains a "?" character), be aware that not every search engine spider crawls dynamic pages as well as static pages. It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them few.
11. Keep links on a page to less than 60 or at the most 75.
12. It is a repetition. But nevertheless, concentrate on content. Because it is the thing that attracts customers and retains their attention and turn leads into sales, it also helps in branding and gain inbound links. Place important keywords in the site’s title tag and add fresh content at regular intervals.
13. Quality content and proper use of keywords would improve your site PR. Article submission, press release, Directory submission, Forum sigs, Blogging, RSS & Feeds it would help you to build up a huge network of backlinks.
14. Avoid hidden text or hidden links. Don't employ cloaking or sneaky redirects. Don't send automated queries to Google. Don't load pages with irrelevant words. Don't create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content. Avoid "doorway" pages created just for search engines, or other "cookie cutter" approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.
15. If your site has too many images, that you would like to index, ensure Google-sensitive image reference should contain 5 key items:
A src attribute specifying the URL of the image
A width declaration in which the width of the image is specified in pixels
A height declaration in which the height of the image is specified in pixels
An alt attribute that describes the content of the image—this is the #1 element of image-oriented SEO
A title attribute that contains text to be displayed when the user hovers his/her mouse over the image
