Such is the obsession for high traffic among most webmasters is that high traffic is almost synonymous with higher earnings. In this quest for higher traffic most seem to forget that you can find ample number of sites which you would just like to forget and quit either from home page itself or by clicking at the most two links here or there. Would such site be able to earn decent money even if it manages to get large traffic? On the contrary, higher conversion rate help you earn more money. I remember a client of mine whose site has an average of 2 ad clicks per visitor rate and on an average 70 percent of visitors add the site to their favorite list.

When a visitor to your site purchases a product, sign sup for your newsletter, adds to his favorite or clicks an ad, I think your objective is achieved. Needless to say the higher the numbers of visitors do something like this for you the better your site does and better would be the valuation for your site.
Certainly I suppose you would agree that you won’t like visitors who just have a sneak a quick look view of your site for few seconds and then decide never to return. Conversion rate varies form site to site depending upon the business in which the site deals. There can not be any broad definition of conversion rate as it would widely differ from site to site however conversion rate from any thing upwards of 4% is considered good. Honestly admitting, while I could not achieve, but some sites have reported conversion rate of upto 15% too!!!!!!! It would be a good idea to set target for increasing the existing conversion rate by 10% of present rate every month and I think this is achievable too.
Conversion rate improvement is never a factor of one thing rather it is outcome of hundreds of various factors; each one of that having potential to improve or hurt the conversion factor. On a generalized basis it might to difficult to say what is ailing your site as any site could be having a peculiar weakness. In one of the site I optimized, while the site was on Hollywood personalities, strangely most the time Google ads displayed were of oracle of similar products resulting in dismal click rate. Better method to guess what suits your site most is to try different methods or variances to your site and see what helps or hurts you most.
Do visit your competitors often and note the changes that are being followed by them or what better they are offering to the customers. Don’t forget to observe even seemingly small areas as logo color or site font or navigation. Note the changing trends in the industry you are operating in. try to offer complete information or view points about the item, product or aspect you are dealing with, leaving little reason for your visitor to go to another site for additional details. For example, if you are selling a product, don’t hesitate to include negative feedback received, if any, from your customers. Have a way to entice them, sign up for a newsletter so that may not be today but they translate into returning customers one day.
Make the content easily understood by most readers. If your site has most readership in China or Southeast Asia, errors in grammar could be ignored, but European or North American reader Is particularly known to be averse to the sites with poor grammar. Get your site checked from a lay surfer and note his opinion. It is true; most webmasters may be able to apprehend the issues of a lay visitor who may not be net or computer savvy at times.
Increasing conversion rate is not a one time event; it is an improvement process that you facilitate over the life of your site. That said, it is not an extremely difficult process, and when used in conjunction with sound SEO it can bring results to your site that you could have never imagined.
