Make each page of your site a perfect landing page
What would you want, should a visitor enter your site through home page and then navigate to other areas or he enters directly on a landing page and gets his information. If a visitor lands on your home page, chances that we would reach the desired page of information he is looking for get diminished. This may due to poor site architecture, navigation or host of other reasons.
Typically landing page is known as the page on your site where a visitor comes after clicking a banner or link. These banners and links could be from paid advertising or simply indexed pages in a search engine results. After a visitor has landed on a page, it is only through good content, structure and visual appeal that you can retain him on the site and coerce him to visit other pages on the site.
Firstly; the content should be clear, concise, lucid and meaningful. Many webmasters have the tendency to add maximum pages to their site, but I the content is not good enough to get high ranking in search engine results or to force a user to book mark the site then entire purpose is lost. I have seen some sites with less than 100 pages doing too well with more than 30 inside pages having PR 4 or above.
Secondly; making Site Navigation is simple but making Simple Site Navigation is an art. A simple navigation with matching color combination, banners or pics would be helpful in getting repeat visit to your site.
Thirdly; Keeping the content short, say about 350 words and yet comprehensive, content in central position and with white spaces, sans cluttering would be a great idea. Use a consistent color palette. If you have advertising or banners that link visitors to your website, make sure the concept and color scheme match across the board. It's also a great visual indicator for the visitor because they can easily identify that they're still in the right place.
Fourth; Do keep some time budget in hand to browse on the net for the latest practices on the net and to stay updated with latest trends. Stay in touch with overture inventory tool for most search keywords.
Fifth; grow your mailing list. It would be a good idea to stay in touch with your visitors. As it happens on the net, even most loyal visitors may need to be reminded about your web presence. Don’t spam but make a meaningful email newsletter relevant to the subject and ask visitor to subscribe. Don’t forget to assure him that his address would not be sold or rented and offer him full unsubscribe facility. Using software that tracks a visitor behavior on your email as to how he opens or responds to it would give you good insight in your mailer.
Lastly; Honestly though I have not be been to achieve this; keep your language simple and in informal tone that binds the visitor to read. He must get the feel that it is in his own tone that he is reading
