For a webmaster, who has planned revenue model of his site third party advertisement on his site, ignoring Adsense is not simple. Admittedly Adsense did revolutionize the contextual advertising segment and has virtually mad this segment as career for many webmasters. A publishers displaying ads on his site, earns money when a visitor to his site "clicks" on an advertisement as a percentage of the advertising revenue generated as a result of the click. Many webmasters have built content websites around the Google Adsense model, whose primary model is to earn through Adsense clicks.
If your site too has Adsense as the revenue model, following simple tricks would do well to contribute to increase the earnings through Adsense.
Clear Theme
Make a site with clear theme, unique and rich content. Site would tend to attract higher traffic and higher traffic with intelligent blend of ads does translate to higher click through rate. Unique and rich content with adequate keywords also gets rich paying ads.
Choose keywords
If you have seen the adwords rates, you would agree that on the same subject of theme, some words cost more to advertise against others. While google has never made public its payout rate, applying the same logic, expensive keywords would have better payout. For example, while cancer medicine and mesothelioma mean the same, payout rate is different,; being higher in mesothelioma. At the same time, it must be seen that with a new website that is optimized for the terms that have the highest payout, it would be difficult to get ads from a search engine, so initially look for modest paying keywords. Consider targeting terms that are moderately priced.
Indexing of Site
As and when the site will be fully crawled by Google, advertisements will get more relevant. Even in the pages that have inadequate keywords otherwise, you may see site relevant ads. In general, older websites will rank better in search engines. The closer the advertisements relate to the webpage's content; the higher the "click-through" the publishers will see.
Experiment with Google Code placement
Experiment with different type, size and placement of Google ads. Not all ad placements have same click through rate. Some ad placements tend to generate ad blindness. Try Google analytics. It would give you good idea of click through rate of different ad unit on your site. While some ads would pay you handsomely because of good click through rate, you would notice, other placement just don’t work.
Create Channels and Sub channels
Find out effectiveness of a specific website or ad placement by using distinct channels and subchannels. This will allow you discover what performs best on a specific website. Beilive it, results may even surprise you, but they will throw up good insight of user behavior on your site. You would know better which site, which page and which ad placement is most profitable on a particular website. Keep in mind that you should take at least a fortnight of data to reach meaningful results. Different days of the week will have varying web traffic, so comparing one week to another will give the most accurate reflection of how effective a campaign performs.
The same is true when testing different advertisement sizes, placement or color schemes. Different days will often result in web traffic fluctuations. Comparing web traffic, week to week will give a clear indication of what ad formats perform the best.
Integrated Ad Placement
Many webmasters have been successful at integrating advertisements into a website. The easiest way to integrate an advertisement into a website is to remove the advertisement border. This will allow the ads to better blend with the webpage. Google recommends contrasting the link colors with the website colors to increase click-through rate. It is also suggested that webmasters randomize the color of the advertisements, so that frequent users will not naturally "filter" the ads.
Number vs Value of Advertisements
Place up to three advertisements on each page. Additional advertisements drop in value and dilute ad inventory so publishers should be cautious in adding more advertisement units. In other words you want to serve the most expensive ads at all times.
Hot Spots
Like web copy, above the fold holds true with AdSense as well. This means that advertisements that appear without having to scroll will be read more frequently. Hot Spots are areas on a web page that result in a higher percentage of click-through rate. According to Google the highest paying advertisements are located on the hot spots.
Google does not indicate if image advertisements or text ads perform better, so webmasters are encouraged to experiment with both.
Highest Performing Ad Sizes
According to Google the 336 x 280 rectangle, the 300 x250 rectangle and the 160 x 600 sky scraper result in the highest number of click-through rate. Depending on the website's design and layout, publishers may experience different results with different ad sizes, placements and color schemes. Experiment and track the results for each website to maximize the AdSense payout.
