Role of Domain Extension in the Google Rankings
Though largely webmasters tend to opine that domain name extension does not matter in Google Ranking, yet the debate appears to be far from over.
Large number of webmasters seems to be equally convinced that domain extension does matter.
Most webmasters tend to prefer .com as extension. This is as they widely believe that Search Engine's would prefer a .com site over a .name or other extension. I don't believe this to be true even though, I too prefer .com extension over any other extension.
My reason for this preference is simple. In any search engine rankings, my guess is that traffic to particular site would also be playing some role at least. Now most people tend to type .com by default after any default name. even the windows shortcut of Ctrl+enter takes you to this extension and there is no shortcut for any other domain name. Ever noticed that webmasters with any other extension while jotting down the site name do emphasize the extension so as you don’t get it wrong.
Ignoring this argument, the theory that a .com will out value a .net which has been proven wrong numerous times.
No doubt, Google is dabbling in semantic indexing (commercial, educational, non-profit, research, etc) Thus you never know, but all other things being equal, the extension may be beneficial.
Name extensions do matter, but you'll still be able to rank with a .name or any other extension. Here's a rough guide to how Google values them. An.org extension is generally used by non-commercial sites and .com is for commercial sites etc.
As for me, from SEO point of view, ill give more attention on inserting some of my keywords on the domain I am going to use rather than the extension name of my url.
If you're just creating a personal webpage about yourself, then it doesn't really matter as to which primary extensions you choose. If this is the case, then focus mainly on the appropriate extension that is best suited to your country.
In regards to the Search Engines... Once you have established your website and acquired all of your extensions needed, you can have all of your other extensions redirected to your primary domain extension. This could possibly add even more SE weight to your site.
