Using Alexa to increase earning potential of the site.

Good traffic does help to improve the earning potential of the site. Higher ranking in Google does help in better monetization by way of increased ad clicks, or sales generation. As a webmaster, one would help Alexa to help improve the earnings of the site.

Alexa audits and ranks traffic on the basis of traffic on the site as measured by Alexa tool bar installed by a user on his PC. The ranking is done on the basis of traffic recorded over a period of three months from users that have the Alexa toolbar installed, and other parameters as reach and page views. The reach refers to the number of Alexa users who visit a particular site in one day. Page view, as the name indicates, is the number of times a particular page (URL) is viewed by Alexa users. Alexa ranking is obtained by performing the geometric mean of reach and page views, averaged over a predefined period of time.

To avoid users manipulating Alexa, it makes it clear though that, if a particular user visits the same URL multiple times on the same day, all those visits will be counted as one. It not only displays information about your ranking but it also sends data to the central server. Each time you visit a Web page via a Web browser that has the toolbar installed, information is sent to the server indicating your IP and the page you are visiting.

But the fact that comes here is it solely dependent upon users who got this toolbar installed. Ground reality is that hardly any significant percentage of users have this tool bar installed. In fact, beyond webmasters, hardly any percentage of lay users know about this. It can, at best, be used as a competitive intelligence tool. You can enter your competitor's site in the "Compare Sites" section and measure the results of your web marketing efforts in comparison with your competitors'.

It helps Webmasters and advertisers see the real marketing potential of your Web site. The better your Alexa rank, the higher they may be willing to bid to buy advertising space on your Web site.

On the other hand it can be misleading before making a buy decision about the site. If a subject that has little interest from webmaster community that traditionally installs this bar, the site, even if it has a lot of traffic, it will not be ranked. Unlike Google page rank, it does not rank separately sub domains or individual pages of the domain. Unlike Google page rank, it pays no importance to links that a site has but only measures the traffic to the site.

Anyways, as I said in my earlier writings, it commands a price. It can not be wished away. The sale price of the site is definitely influenced by Alexa rating. The price for a link that you might be selling or price for a blog that you may like to post on your site is definitely influenced by Alexa rating.

SO do install Alexa toolbar. Some do call it a spyware, but so far there is no case (At least not one that I have heard) of this spyware harming any one.
